COVID-19 CAMPAIGN | SUPPORTING THE TRIBAL FARMERS OF SITTILINGI VALLEY

The Sittilingi Organic Farmers Association (SOFA) is a collective of 500 tribal farmers who live in the Sittilingi Valley of Dharmapuri District of Tamil Nadu. The farmers along with 450 women have produced 80 tonnes of ORGANIC TURMERIC POWDER this year, but due to the COVID-19 lockdown - they have not been able to sell it. This means a financial disaster and doom for them. This usually sells in retail stores for INR 300 to 450 per kg.
SVAD is the brand name for organic agricultural produce sold by the Sittilingi Organic Farmer’s Association (SOFA). ‘SVAD’ means ‘taste’ and also stands for Sittilingi Valley Agricultural Development. They have been farming organically for more than 10 years now. The women help process and powder the turmeric and make it ready to cook. The venture is supported by the Tribal Health Initiative.
Turmeric, also known as Curcuma longa, is often referred to as the “Queen of Spices.” People across India and the globe use it in their cooking.
Turmeric contains a wide range of antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, anticarcinogenic, antimutagenic, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also loaded with many healthy nutrients such as protein, dietary fibre, niacin, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin K, potassium, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, and zinc.

Tribal Health Initiative was started in 1992 by Dr. Regi George and Dr. Lalitha Regi. Today we have expanded into a team of over 55 highly trained people, working to improve the lives of the tribal communities living in the Sittilingi valley and surrounding hills through a variety of programs in health care, community health, farming, and craftwork.
