41.3% of people in Mumbai live in slums. Over 10.5 million people don’t have access to proper housing in this city alone. During the monsoon, these houses get flooded with water and its inhabitants often have to sleep in the filthy, murky water because they can’t afford a bed to sleep in. Prolonged stay in contaminated water can cause recreational water diseases. They have a wide range of infections which include gastrointestinal, skin, ear, respiratory, eye, neurological and wound infections.
Children that live in these areas, have to often go out for economic reasons. They do not have adequate protection against the rain when they go out to school and other places. This can lead to high fevers and other infections which may have a detrimental impact on childhood growth and cognitive development.
By providing them with high-quality raincoats, they stay dry and are protected this monsoon as they move about. The raincoats are of very high quality, and a lot of effort has gone into designing it. They will be given to street kids and kids in municipal schools. Geographically, they will be given in Dharavi, Mulund, Mankhurd & Powai.
The raincoats use recycled material, have a unisex design, come in 6 sizes & have a cool hoodie.
ABOUT THE RAINCOATS
MUMBAI SLUMS DURING MONSOON
PROJECT RAINCOAT
This raincoat is made from polytetrafluoroethylene which has microscopic pores that large enough to allow water vapour from your body to escape, yet small enough to prevent water droplets from getting inside. Keeping dry can go a long way especially when it ensures that you can be safe and healthy.
ACE has partnered with the Dharavi School and the Art of Living Foundation for the distribution of raincoats in the slum areas of the city. Through these channels, that will ensure that thousands of raincoats reach the children who need them. The Raincoat Project aims at providing superior quality raincoats to India’s underprivileged street children and young adults during the monsoon season. They will be distributed across Mumbai.
ABOUT ME
My name is Avantika Swali, I am 13-years old and in Grade 8 at the Bombay International School.
Rains are about playing in the rain, enjoying the weather, having hot samosa's, etc. But there are many street children who are not as lucky as we are and have to bear the brunt of the harsh Mumbai monsoons. What is a boon to us, is a bane for them. Monsoons are often a time of concern for them - they get wet often, they fall ill and many of them have to venture out due to economic reasons.
Something as simple as a raincoat, will keep them safe, give them the freedom to go out without fear and keep them dry and healthier.
I was very intrigued by "The Raincoat Project" and even more so by the thoughtfully designed, high-quality raincoats that are being made by them. I am sure that those who receive it will treasure it and be proud to wear it. I request all of you to support my campaign so that we can ease the hardship of the street children in Mumbai. Let's come together and do our bit to help these children and young adults.

How does crowdfunding work?
Crowdfunding in India is a relatively new concept & is growing very quickly.
It’s a concept that allows a large number of funders (like you) to fund an idea or a cause or event by giving small amounts of money online. Fueladream.com is a crowdfunding platform in India that allows for such pooling of funds. You can fund innovations & ideas on FuelADream and be the first to get these products or make them come true. You can also do a good turn by funding charities and causes through crowdfunding. When you fund a charity it’s more like a donation & you get small innovative rewards like a shout-out on an FB page or a thank you email from the beneficiaries.
