THE BACKGROUND
Dr.Rita Cyril Joseph has been diagnosed to have Adenocarcinoma of the lung with metastasis from a chance Xray of the chest on the 18th of June at the Hinduja Hospital. Within 3-hours a whole-body PET scan was performed and C.T guided biopsy of the lesion on the 19th of June revealed nonsmall cell Adeno Carcinoma of the lung. EGFR (Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor) was found to be mutation-positive.
Dr.Ramakant Deshpande and Dr.Sachin Almel conferred that the best treatment for her would be an immuno targeted therapy with a drug called Tagrisso 80mg daily lifelong. Treatment was initiated on the 30th of June to date. There has been remarkable regression of symptoms within 10-days of the treatment itself. The only drawback of the drug is the tremendous cost.
Each strip of 10 tablets costs over 2L rupees. However, she was put on a patient support program where she needs to pay for one strip only every month and 2 strips will be given free of cost. The company Astrazenicka further reduced the price of the strip to 1.6 lakhs every month.
