THE PROBLEM

End-Stage Renal Disease ( ESRD) is a condition where the "KIDNEYS" do not function. The only solution for those with this kidney issue is dialysis or a kidney transplant. Kidney transplants are too expensive.

Dialysis is one of the first technological innovations in medicine - and the only treatment that does not involve transplant, and yet allows a patient with end-stage organ failure to live long healthy, and productive lives. Dialysis removes the “waste” chemicals that accumulate in the blood because the failed kidneys are unable to excrete them.

Without dialysis, a patient will NOT SURVIVE.

This is very expensive as it needs to be done 8-10 times a month and most people from the middle class and poor homes cannot afford this. It takes a severe toll on the finances of the household.

Dialysis doesn’t completely replace kidney function. It replaces a portion of the function performed by the kidney. However, the same if done regularly has been found to be sufficient to help patients have a relatively good quality of life. However, dialysis does come with its challenges.

Dialysis is an expensive process and costs an upward INR 1200 per sitting in Mumbai, on an avg. people would require 8-10 sittings. This makes it inaccessible to the urban poor.

THE SOLUTION

Giving dialysis at a subsidised cost to these patients is the only solution.

The Rotary Club of Bombay Hanging Garden has partnered with the  MOTIBEN DALVI HOSPITAL located in GAMDEVI. In 2015 they donated 5 dialysis machines to the hospital. Each machine costs about INR 6.5L each. This was done by the Rotary club and the PVSC foundation. 4 machines form the dialysis centre at the hospital and one machine is in the ICU.

They provide dialysis at a subsidised cost of ONLY INR 600 per session. (The total cost is INR 1200).On average, a patient requires dialysis 8-10 times a month. Fund INR 3000 for example and you could support 5 dialysis sessions and give life to a patient suffering from a Kidney problem (ESRD) for 15-18 days.

This campaign of mine aims to raise as much as possible to fund a large number of patients and their dialysis needs. It's all about "SAVING LIVES - ONE DIALYSIS AT A TIME".

THE PROCESS

ABOUT ME & THIS CAMPAIGN

I am ALEYA SHIVDASANI, 16 years old & a Grade 11 student at the Bombay International School (BIS).

End-Stage Renal Disease ( ESRD) is a condition where the kidneys do not function. The only solution for those with this kidney issue is dialysis.

This initiative of mine is to help those who find it difficult to afford to get dialysis in Mumbai. Its a life long need and puts a big strain on their pocket financially. My efforts will help sustain life, especially during these turbulent times. These patients need dialysis to survive and I think it is our responsibility to ensure that we provide them with whatever support we can extend. It costs just INR 600 per dialysis and  INR 4800 to impact a patient for a month (8 times a month).

With your help, I would like to help as many patients for as long as possible.

ABOUT THE HOSPITAL AND DIALYSIS CENTRE

The Smt. Motiben B. Dalvi Hospital & Ramesh Tulsiani Annexe & Medical Research Centre is run by the People’s Medical Relief Society founded in 1946 & registered in 1949. In 1967, some like-minded young and dynamic groups of social workers began “The People’s Medical Relief Society ’ to cater to medical services to middle and lower-middle-class strata of people. With the mission in mind, on 27th March 1971, Smt. Motiben B. Dalvi Hospital was inaugurated by the then Health Minister of the State Dr. Rafique Zakaria. The Hospital commenced its activities with 21 beds for medical and Paediatric patients manned by full-time nursing and paramedical staff.

In 2015 they got 5 dialysis machines from the Rotary Club of Bombay Hanging Garden and became a very active a critical centre for patients with end-stage renal disease ( Kidney failure). For the poor and the middle class in this area, this centre is a life-line.

How does crowdfunding work?

Crowdfunding in India is a relatively new concept & is growing very quickly.

It’s a concept that allows a large number of funders (like you) to fund an idea or a cause or event by giving small amounts of money online. Fueladream.com is a crowdfunding platform in India that allows for such pooling of funds. You can fund innovations & ideas on FuelADream and be the first to get these products or make them come true. You can also do a good turn by funding charities and causes through crowdfunding. When you fund a charity it’s more like a donation & you get small innovative rewards like a shout-out on an FB page or a thank you email from the beneficiaries.

Updates have been committed to after the campaign ends.
This is an open forum for all funders of this campaign.
