THE PROBLEM

Every year, 3000 children are treated at Tata Memorial Hospital of which 90% come from outside Mumbai. The average length of stay is around 11 months. The quality of accommodation is extremely important as these children are on intensive chemotherapy, which leads to poor immunity and very high risk of developing serious infections.

Unfortunately, some families can’t afford to pay for accommodations in the vicinity of the hospital are forced to abandon therapy or stay on the footpath leading to infections and death. A lack of accommodation near the treating cancer centre is one of the prime reason for treatment refusal and abandonment of therapy of childhood cancer in developing countries

THE SOLUTION

Getting accommodation at a good clean place will help them in continuing treatment as well as preventing infections thereby preventing the death of these children due to cancer or its complications. The minimum cost of providing stay to a cancer patient and his family (for a maximum of 4 members) would be just INR 300 per day which works out to about INR 9000 over a 30 day period.

ABOUT ME & THIS CAMPAIGN

My name is Laksh Sharma. I am 15 years old and in Grade 10 at the Bombay Scottish School, Powai.

This campaign will support children suffering from Cancer.

I have always felt that what makes us different is the ability to communicate on a large basis. This communication is held up by the strong foundation of mutual respect, feeling of oneness and trust. Therefore it makes it our duty to help those in need.

Cancer patients I feel suffer the most because treatment is long and tedious. One major misconception which people have is that the treatment for cancer is very expensive and not very affordable for underprivileged people, but the more serious problem faced by them is managing to stay in a foreign city. Many poor families come from villages to metro cities for cancer treatment and the major problem they face is accommodation. These people have to stay on the pavement in the worst of condition which make their chance of survival minimum.

That is why I wish to help these people from the means of this campaign and I hope you resonate with my thoughts and help me in this journey.

ABOUT THE NGO

The Helping Hands Foundation is a non-profit organization, which works with children who are diagnosed with cancer. We work on two projects – the Accommodation Project and the Survivor Project. The Accommodation Project provides free accommodation to the child and the family during treatment in Dharamshalas surrounding the hospital and the Survivor Project works towards regular testing and rehabilitation of children who beat cancer. The Helping Hands Foundation is a fundraising entity and works in conjunction with Tata Memorial Hospital’s ImPaCCT Foundation.

Our mission is to provide accommodation to every single child who comes to Mumbai for treatment thereby ensuring zero abandonment due to lack of accommodation.

FAQs

Will we get to know the details of the people who benefitted?

Yes. After the money has been collected it will be transferred to HELPING HANDS. It will take from 3 to 6 months after that to get details of who the beneficiary was with details of them. Once I get this information from the team at HELPING HANDS, I shall upload this on the UPDATES section of this campaign. You will then get an alert & can read details about the beneficiaries.

When do I get the receipts?

It takes up to 2 weeks after the campaign is closed for the monies to be transferred. The receipts will start getting processed about 2 to 4 weeks AFTER the money has been transferred. The receipts  will be sent to you directly.

How does crowdfunding work?

Crowdfunding in India is a relatively new concept & is growing very quickly.

It’s a concept that allows a large number of funders (like you) to fund an Idea or a cause or event by giving small amounts of money online. Fueladream.com is a crowdfunding platform in India that allows for such a pooling of funds.

You can fund innovations & ideas on Fueladream and be the first to get these products or make them come true. You can also do a good turn by funding charities and causes through crowdfunding. When you fund a charity it’s more like a donation & you get small innovative rewards like a shout-out on FB page or a thank you email from the beneficiaries.

Updates have been committed to after the campaign ends.
