THE PROBLEM

Many women in and around Kolkata need help as they do not have a sustainable livelihood.

For example, there are around 3,000 tiger widows in the islands of the Sunderbans, women whose husbands have been killed by tigers or crocodiles while they were fishing, catching crabs or collecting honey for their livelihood. Always challenged by natural disasters and human-animal conflicts, the people of these villages don’t have permits from the forest department to go to the core area, which makes their work illegal. The bagh-bidhobas or tiger widows, therefore, cannot claim compensation and so they rarely inform the authorities about tiger-linked deaths. In many cases, the bodies of those attacked by tigers cannot be traced and they are treated as missing persons. Almost every villager in these islands has a tragic story to narrate.

In addition to this, women from low-income homes & sex workers in Kolkata also need help.

Therefore there is an urgent need for these women to be involved in income generating activities.

THE SOLUTIONS

Notun Jibon, an NGO based in Kolkata are setting up production units where such underprivileged women will be to taught stitch masks and mosquito nets. This will support these women by teaching them a skill and also by giving them sewing machines. The first production centres have already been set up in Kalighat & Sundarbans, for 35 women.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS:

#The women will be given USHA International Double Stitch Machines.

#They will be trained for 2 months on how to stitch mosquito nets & masks.

#They will be given INR 35 per net and INR 3 per mask.

# After 2 months of training, they will earn INR 4000 per month.

ABOUT ME & THIS CAMPAIGN

My name is Yash Vardhan Somani. I am 14 years old & in Grade 9 at La Martiniere for Girls School.

I am doing this campaign to help women and give them a sustainable livelihood. This will be done in and around Kolkata (Sundarbans, Kalighat, etc.) This will completely transform the lives of women who really need help, many of them are windows from the Sundarbans area and these women have lost their husbands to tiger & crocodile attacks. The women from Kolkata are from low-income homes or are sex workers.

The fact that it costs just INR 8000 to impact a woman is amazing. I was surprised to learn that with just this much, they can have a sustainable livelihood. This will impact them and their livelihood. Please support my campaign and let us together bring relief to more women.

How does crowdfunding work?

Crowdfunding in India is a relatively new concept & is growing very quickly.

It’s a concept that allows a large number of funders (like you) to fund an idea or a cause or event by giving small amounts of money online. Fueladream.com is a crowdfunding platform in India that allows for such pooling of funds. You can fund innovations & ideas on FuelADream and be the first to get these products or make them come true. You can also do a good turn by funding charities and causes through crowdfunding. When you fund a charity it’s more like a donation & you get small innovative rewards like a shout-out on an FB page or a thank you email from the beneficiaries.

Updates have been committed to after the campaign ends.
