Did you know that it's possible to grow leather-like material fermented on wastewater from mature coconuts?
That's exactly what we do at Malai! We are a start-up company based in Kerala - the land of coconuts - where we research and develop circular materials based on coconuts.
Malai - our pilot material is grown on water from mature coconuts with the addition of natural fibres from Banana stems, Sisal and Hemp plants. It is a viable alternative to animal leather for making accessories or light footwear. Apart from that, it's made using no nasties, it's home compostable and 100 % vegan. As such you could even eat it! (PETA certified).
The selection of our base ingredients is not random: it has been meticulously researched and tested over hundreds of trials and errors. Every ingredient is important for the final properties of Malai. We have committed not to add anything oil-based because we want to maintain the disposal of our materials hassle-free: we designed the end at the beginning.
We have designed a beautifully crafted and practical collection of accessories made from these materials that we offer to you as rewards!
Times are very tough for small businesses in India. We are a self funded company and without the possibility to run our operations due to lockdown we will not be able to continue keeping our mission going.
We have designed a collection of versatile and practical accessories ranging from simple wallets to laptop covers and tote bags. PRE-ORDER NOW!
Malai was founded in 2017 as a research project by Zuzana Gombosova (material designer & researcher from Slovakia) and Susmith CS (product designer and mechanical engineer) from Kerala. In 2018, we incorporated as a company and began the Malai journey full time. Today we run a small scale pilot manufacturing unit near Kochi. We have a dedicated production staff, sales representative, 2 directors and 2 interns.
Malai is a novel biocomposite material developed by Malai Biomaterials (us) in Kerala. It's based on Bacterial Cellulose grown on waste water from mature coconuts, plant fibres and natural gums. It can serve as an alternative to animal leather in applications such as accessories, light footwear and home interiors.
Yes, Malai is PETA certified vegan material that doesn't contain anything of animal origin.
Are the accessories biodegradable? What do I do with them at the end of life?
Yes, not only are all our materials (except metal trimmings which one can recycle) biodegradable, they are home compostable too. Once you don't want to use your Malai accessory any longer, shred it in smaller pieces, remove any metal trimmings and insert in your compost. The materials will biodegrade within 90-120 days in home compost.
Once you place your order, a member from our team will get in touch with you regarding your colour preference.
Being a crowdfunded campaign, we will not be accepting any returns.
Crowdfunding in India is a relatively new concept & is growing very quickly.
It’s a concept that allows a large number of funders (like you) to fund an idea or a cause or event by giving small amounts of money online. Fueladream.com is a crowdfunding platform in India that allows for such pooling of funds. You can fund innovations & ideas on FuelADream and be the first to get these products or make them come true. You can also do a good turn by funding charities and causes through crowdfunding. When you fund a charity it’s more like a donation & you get small innovative rewards like a shout-out on an FB page or a thank you email from the beneficiaries.
