The BOMBAY SCOTTISH School “AID EDUCATION " initiative is a campaign that is being done by me and my fellow students to raise funds for distributing EDUCATION KITS consisting of notebooks and pencils to students in rural schools in the Sonave village area in Palghar district which is predominantly a tribal area. This is located 70 kms and about 2 hours from Mumbai if you travel along the Western express highway.
The lack of a simple items like books and pencils is a huge need gap that impacts both their interest to come to school and their education. They are deprived of these items because of economic constraints. This is being done in partnership with the NARGIS DUTT FOUNDATION ( a registered non-profit based out of Bandra in Mumbai) and Hello Dustbin ( a socially focused enterprise based out of Hyderabad).
WHAT ELSE IS UNIQUE ABOUT THIS?
This is where an innovative company called Hello Dustbin comes in. This Hyderabad based startup is in the business of recycling dry waste. They recycle paper and cardboard items also and as a part of their social program are asking a third party to make beautiful books and pencils that are made from RECYCLED material.
So these are ALL RECYCLED PRODUCTS. GREEN, UNIQUE and DURABLE.
Each student will get 5 books & 20 pencils. These are colourful, good looking, made from recycled material and vegetable dyes and are GREEN products. In the process, we will cut down less trees, grow awareness about recycling and impact rural kids’ education. The cost of this kit including shipping them from Bangalore to Mumbai will be INR 600 per child. Help me raise INR 24000 and impact 40 children.
PIC : The school pack sample. Will have 5 books like this and 20 pencils. There is also a wonderful pencil box for carrying the pencils which is reusable.
This is how the book and the pencils look. Beautifully designed, colourful, they are green and durable products. The books are slightly larger to provide more writing space and are 100 pages each.
The books will also on the back cover have my name and the names of all my fellow classmates from Bombay Scottish. The cost of a SET of books and pencils per student will be INR 600. This is a program where we as students will make a different to our fellow students in rural areas. The books & pencils will be distributed in schools in and around the SONAVE area in PALGHAR district. This is located 70 kms from Mumbai. The list of schools we are targeting is listed at the end of this story.
The cost of making them (they are made in Bangalore) and distributing them is much higher than INR 600 and the additional cost is being funded by Hello Dustbin.
HELP ME RAISE INR 24,000 & IMPACT 40 STUDENTS.
The money raised, will be given to the NARGIS DUTT FOUNDATION (NDF). Once the money is given to them, they will in partnership with Hello Dustbin get the BOOKS and PENCILS made. The team from NDF will then go to these schools and distribute them to the students. They will let us know the date of distribution so that if we want to actually go there and see the impact it is making, we can.
They will also share the details with me post-distribution. We will get photos, facts of how many students in which schools benefitted and a confirmation from the principal of these schools so that you know how your money has been used.
CASE STUDIES OF RURAL STUDENTS
ABOUT ME & THIS CAMPAIGN:
My name is Tareen Khan and I am in Grade 10 studying in Bombay Scottish School, Powai. My hobbies include reading, basketball, chess and music.
I have undertaken this campaign because I think the gift of education is something that every child deserves but not all of them are lucky to receive. I cannot imagine the plight of underprivileged children going to school without notebooks or pencils which are the bare essentials for any student.
Writing, doodling and taking down notes are activities that sharpen our learning, give rise to creativity and promote mental activity. They are simple yet meaningful acts that we privileged kids often take for granted. Fortunately we are blessed with a life wherein we don't have to think twice before writing every single sentence that goes in our notebooks. These kids, however, are not as lucky.
The fact that these books and pencils are made out of recycled milk tetra packs and vegetable dyes should also be taken into consideration. They are exquisite looking and brightly coloured and will surely put a smile on the children's faces. They clearly send a message about how important recycling is and how we as a society are actively taking steps to promote it and preserve our environment.
The fact that a contribution of just 600 Rs can make a difference to the life of a fellow student in a rural school made me realize that I should definitely do everything I can to help. I believe that the tools for proper education are vital and should be made available to everyone irrespective of their financial condition.
Please support my campaign and be a part of this unique experience where we can change peoples lives.

Our Partners
NARGIS DUTT FOUNDATION
Based out of Bandra in Mumbai they are a non-profit organisation that has been doing exemplary work in the field of health, education, rural development and during national calamities. The Nargis Dutt Foundation has come a long way since its first chapter in New York in 1981 and has today spread across several countries. Although promoting cancer healthcare remains our core value, we have also diversified into supporting many causes in Education, Health and Social Awareness. Sensing a need to bring about awareness in the areas of student suicides, general healthcare, the elderly and the importance of platelets, we have conducted several campaigns across Mumbai in association with various schools, colleges and NGO’s.
We have been working relentlessly to impact and change the quality of education and schools in the Sonave area in Palghar district. This area is hilly, tribal and located just 70 kms from Mumbai. This area is dramatically backwards and its shocking that such poverty can actually be present just 2hours from the financial capital of the country. We have invested significant efforts in building the infrastructure of the schools in this area - from classrooms, to toilets, to e-education with computers and better content. Students have been funded uniforms, bags, footwear etc and there has been a significant improvement in the overall quality of education. There is still a need to help them and now we want to also focus on basic aids like notebooks and pencils.

We are raising money to cover the cost of making these recycled notebooks and pencils. Once the campaign ends we will post an update to keep you the funders abreast of the beneficiaries. Feedback will be given as a report with pictures and fact sheet on which schools and which students got the books and pencils. The books will be printed with your name ( and the names of all the other students participating) on the back cover with a message saying " With love from the students of BSS, Mumbai".

FAQs
Will we get to know details of the students who benefitted?
Yes. After the money has been collected it will be transferred by Fueladream to NARGIS DUTT FOUNDATION. It will take from 30 to 90 days after that to get details of who the beneficiary was with details of them. Once I get this information from them I shall upload this on the UPDATES section of this campaign. You will then get an alert & can read details about the beneficiaries.
What are the crowdfunding charges & cost of each SCHOOL KIT?
Fueladream charges 9% as crowdfunding charges. There is a payment gateway fee of 3% (for both the Indian and foreign gateway) plus a GST component of 2.16%. This adds up to 14.16%. There is also an initial fee of 3000 INR which is being waived for us. With all this, the funds we need to give one school kit consisting of notebooks and pencils are still only INR 600 per child.
When do I get the receipts?
It takes up to 2-3 weeks after the campaign is closed for the monies to be transferred to NARGIS DUTT FOUNDATION. The receipts will start getting processed about 4 to 6 weeks AFTER the campaign is closed and will be sent to you directly.
How does crowdfunding work?
Crowdfunding in India is a relatively new concept & is growing very quickly.
It’s a concept that allows a large number of funders (like you) to fund an Idea or a cause or event by giving small amounts of money online. Fueladream.com is a crowdfunding platform in India that allows for such a pooling of funds. You can fund innovations & ideas on FuelADream and be the first to get these products or make them come true. You can also do a good turn by funding charities and causes through crowdfunding. When you fund a charity it’s more like a donation & you get small innovative rewards like a shout-out on an FB page or a thank you email from the beneficiaries
