Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a disabling and life-threatening disease caused by the poliovirus. The virus spreads from person to person and can infect a person's spinal cord, causing paralysis (can't move parts of the body). It most commonly affects children under the age of 5. The virus spreads from person to person or through contaminated water. It attacks the nervous system, and in some instances, leads to paralysis.
Many of us grew up in the 1970's and 80's with Polio around us. We benefitted from Polio vaccines. There are still many children globally who are at risk and this crowdfunding initiative aims to raise funds to give vaccines to children and ensure that this terrible disease does not spread.
Other Rotarians and I, from the Rotary District 3232 are committed to this cause and we want to end polio. This is an initiative by Rotary International since 1979 and clubs across the world are doing their bit to eradicate polio. All funds raised through this campaign will be used to provide polio vaccines to underprivileged kids.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is the largest private source of funding for the GPEI. For every $1 donated to End Polio Now, up to $50 million per year, it gives $2 for polio eradication. It provides technical support and invests in research to enhance polio vaccines, surveillance, and outbreak response.

Polio is something that my generation has seen. Many youngsters in India do not know what it is thanks to the efforts made by different governments and organizations like Rotary, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, UNICEF, etc. Polio is a deadly disease and one shudders to think of its negative impact on a young child's life. Other countries have reared their ugly head, and this initiative is about eliminating them globally.
Just INR 150 is required to give a vaccine. I would like to impact 500 children. The fact that every funding you make will have a matching grant of two (ie a doubling) by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation should be an added incentive for you.

Polio has suddenly started appearing in the last 1 year again and this initiative aims to reverse the trend.
Rotary International District 3232 has over 170 Rotary Clubs with over 8000 members. District 3232 is a vibrant and active District that has been doing high-impact programs. This District was the originator of the Red Measles vaccination program in India which was the starting point of Polio vaccinations. District 3232 has been active in water body restorations, renovation of schools, providing drinking water communities, etc.
District 3232 has the distinction of being a giving District. This District has been among the top performing worldwide in raising funds for projects.
Funding for this campaign is eligible for tax breaks as Rotary International District 3232 is a registered NGO and you can avail of benefits under section 80G of IT act.
