THE PROBLEM :
There is a municipal school in the slum of DHARAVI ( Asia’s largest slum) at SION, MUMBAI which is in a very dilapidated and poor state. This school caters to about 300 students of Grades 1 to 9 (280 currently) who come from nearby areas. It’s an English and Marathi medium school.
The school classrooms, buildings, infrastructure, wash areas, etc. are in a state of neglect for lack of funds. For children, it’s a depressing environment that is unsafe, unhealthy, and not the best place to be learning.
This affects the attendance, health, and education of the students negatively.
The main issues are:
- Poor quality benches for students to sit on.
- Classrooms have paint peeling off, walls with moisture, poor lighting, and bad windows and doors.
- The wash basin and toilets need repair.
- Tiles are broken (both floor and wall).
- Electrical connections are exposed and pose a hazard.
- The overall school look is dilapidated and lacks energy and safety.
The Principal, Mr. Waghmare, and the teaching staff are very dedicated teachers, loved by the students, and are most grateful for this crowdfunding campaign for their school.
Would you as a parent send a child to a school that looks like this (SEE IMAGES BELOW)
THE SOLUTION :
To address the problem, the Rotary Club of Mumbai SOBO is focusing on transforming the MPPM school in Shastri Nagar, located in the Dharavi slum area - in Mumbai, into a “HAPPY SCHOOL” by renovating it. The aim is to transform the school building and infrastructure, which is in a very vulnerable state into a secure, attractive, and happy learning place.
This happy school project will ensure a safe and productive school life for the students and also help them to reach their full potential and become ” change-makers” in their slum community. It will be a school where students can learn and be happy while learning. The Rotary Happy School initiative taken up by many Rotary Clubs across India has transformed thousands of schools in India, including in Mumbai.
The cost of doing this is estimated at INR 10.2L (see details below) and this will impact 300 children. The cost per child of doing this works out to be approximately INR 3500 per student. So if you fund
INR 3500 - you impact a child for years to come
INR 7000 - you impact 2 students similarly.
INR 35000 - you impact 10 students.
Fund generously and let us together create a happy school and happy students.
See the images below of some schools that have been transformed and see the graphic which shows the different components of the happy school.
COST SHEET AND SCHOOL INFORMATION :
The below is the estimate of the basic cost of transforming this school in Dharavi into a Happy School.
ABOUT ME :
My name is Bansari. I am 14-years-old and a Grade student at The Kanakia International School at Chembur,Mumbai.
I am running this crowdfunding campaign to transform a Municipal school in Shastri Nagar located in the Dharavi slum at Sion, Mumbai and turn it into a "HAPPY SCHOOL".
I am a dancer and have been dancing since the age of 3, I play sports like basketball , handball and football. I am an enthusiastic learner and a keen student.
I was very surprised and shocked to see the images of the school building, class rooms, common areas and wondered how children are able to study in such an environment. Making the school and classrooms bright, cheerful, safe and providing them with hygienic wash rooms etc is a very basic requirement.
Through this campaign, me and my other friends aim to transform this school so that 280 plus children who come here, learn in a better environment and look forward to coming to the school. This will help the students reach their potential and leverage their education to build a career and life for themselves.

How does crowdfunding work?
Crowdfunding in India is a relatively new concept & is growing very quickly.
It’s a concept that allows a large number of funders (like you) to fund an idea or a cause or event by giving small amounts of money online. Fueladream.com is a crowdfunding platform in India that allows for such pooling of funds. You can fund innovations and ideas on FuelADream and be the first to get these products or make them come true. You can also do a good turn by funding charities and causes through crowdfunding. When you fund a charity it’s more like a donation and you get small innovative rewards like a shout-out on an FB page or a thank you email from the beneficiaries.
