THE BACKGROUND

Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder causing excessive red blood cell destruction and anemia.

Globally, around 100,000 children are born with Thalassemia Major annually, with 10,000 of those cases occurring in India. Children with Thalassemia need lifelong, frequent blood transfusions, every 15 to 21 days, along with daily medications to maintain a relatively normal life. Unfortunately, many underprivileged families struggle to cover the high treatment costs for their affected children. When left untreated, this condition can lead to problems in the liver, heart, and spleen.

There are hundreds of such children in and around Lucknow who need help. Thalassemics India Society, Lucknow works along with Thalassemia patients and parents. They need regular blood transfusions and need regular Iron Chelation therapy which is very painful and cumbersome to live a normal life. Due to the high cost of treatment, children with low incomes find it difficult to afford it.

Read this story to learn more about this campaign of mine and how it can help save the lives of these patients and bring much-needed relief to their families.

The Thalassemia India Society works with young patients in close partnership with the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI), Lucknow.

Families with a Thalassemic child face substantial financial challenges.

The cost of treatments like regular blood transfusions, medicines, and regular investigations additional financial burden on families with limited income will lead to stress and anxiety. Not having easy access to specialized healthcare can also affect the quality of care for their child. Parents spend more time with these special children which makes it difficult to earn their living.

What happens when Thalassemia patients get too much iron from blood transfusions?

Regular blood transfusions lead to the accumulation of excess iron in the body, which must be removed through medication to prevent complications in the heart, lungs, liver, and other organs.

SOLUTION: THE IRON CHELATION THERAPY

Chelation therapy is a medical treatment that involves using certain medicines to remove excessive iron from the body in these patients. It works by binding to these extra minerals and forming a compound that can be removed from the body. This chelation therapy helps in extracting the extra iron from the body, preventing potential damage.

So, in simple terms, it's like a cleaning process that helps keep the body from having extra minerals, which can be a problem in some medical conditions.

For over two decades, the Thalassemia India Society in Lucknow has supported Thalassemia patients with blood transfusions, counseling, and other treatment assistance. Currently, nearly 400 underprivileged children receive subsidized support, and you can help make it entirely cost-free!

IT COSTS JUST INR 3000 MONTHLY TO PROVIDE IRON CHELATION THERAPY TO A YOUNG PATIENT.

Case Study:

About me & this campaign:

My name is Shambhavi Singh. I am a Grade 11 student at The Millennium School, Lucknow.

I learned that there are so many children from low-income homes who are suffering from Thalassemia and who live in and around Lucknow. This puts a severe financial burden on the family (as monthly treatment for life is the only solution). I believe that healthcare is a basic necessity that should be available to everyone irrespective of their financial condition.

It would be wonderful to support these children and make the IRON chelation therapy free for them. This along with blood transfusions will help them lead an almost normal life. It will also give a huge amount of relief to the parents and family. The fact that just INR 3000 per month can make a difference and impact someone's life made me realize that I must do something about it.

Please support my campaign and together we can help make a difference to these young patients (who are probably my age or younger) by funding their Iron Chelation Treatment.

Fueladream.com is a crowdfunding platform in India that allows for such pooling of funds. You can fund innovations and ideas on FuelADream and be the first to get these products or make them come true. You can also do a good turn by funding charities and causes through crowdfunding.
