THE BACKDROP:
Dera Bassi, a suburban town of Chandigarh and located on the Chandigarh – Delhi National Highway, is experiencing rapid industrial growth. This area owing to its strategic location near the boundary of Haryana, Punjab, and Union territory of Chandigarh is a prime location for both large-scale and small-scale industries.

Derabassi's industrial growth has a dark side: worsening air quality, water pollution, and a threatened natural landscape. Air pollution takes center stage, causing respiratory issues, skin irritation, and even cancer. The toll on the local economy is also stark, with farmers seeing crop yields plummet due to contaminated soil and water.
Urgent action is needed to mitigate the effects of industrialization and protect the health and livelihoods of Derabassi's residents.
Through this campaign I aim to transform Derabassi's industrial landscape into a thriving green oasis, combating pollution and fostering a healthier environment for our community.
THE SOLUTION:
To address these environmental challenges, my initiative Green Habit Hub has collaborated with the NGO SAHAITA and has launched a comprehensive tree-planting campaign. On July 14, 2024, we successfully planted 250 trees in our township. Our next major planting drive will take place in the municipal council park at the heart of Derabassi, where we have prepared 400 pits for new trees.
To ensure the success and sustainability of our efforts, we have partnered with the municipal corporation to expedite the planting process and identify suitable locations. Additionally, we have established a reliable watering mechanism and plan to hire a dedicated individual to care for the newly planted trees.
We are planning to plant trees like Gulmohar, Neem, Karanj tree, Jamun, Oak Tree, Mulberry, Acacia, etc.

My name is Ashira Singh Sandhu, and I am a Grade 11 student at The Strawberry Fields High School, Sector 26, Chandigarh. My campaign aims to plant 1,000 trees in Derabassi to transform it into a greener, healthier community.
Derabassi is experiencing rapid industrial growth, which has brought about environmental challenges such as deteriorating air quality and reduced green spaces. By planting 1,000 trees, we hope to mitigate these effects by improving air quality, lowering temperatures, and enhancing biodiversity.
Our goal is to create a sustainable and thriving environment for the residents of Derabassi. The trees we plant will provide shade, reduce pollution, and create habitats for local wildlife. I founded Green Habit Hub in 2018, driven by my passion to tackle the pervasive plastic waste in my community, and with the support of like-minded friends from Derabassi, my initiative was born. Since then, I have undertaken numerous initiatives through Green Habit, including tree plantation drives, waste segregation, and composting, with a mission to regenerate our planet by planting trees, reducing plastic waste, and restoring ecological balance through care for all beings, striving to create a sustainable future.
ABOUT THE PARTNER NGO:
Sahaita is committed to educating, supporting, and uplifting underprivileged members of society. They accomplished this through 3 pillars of seva - healthcare initiatives, education sponsorships (including vocational training), and humanitarian relief. Sahaita will help to provide resources that are readily available to needy children and the elderly regardless of their status, background, religion, or caste.
