THE BACKGROUND AND THE PROBLEM:
In Bengaluru's Gangondanahalli village (where exactly is this relative to say PEENYA in Bengaluru), a transwoman named Nakshatra, founded the NGO 'Nammane Summane' in 2020 to support the destitute and homeless.
This inclusive shelter, the first of its kind in India, provides care without gender or social class distinctions. Despite financial challenges, Nakshatra remains dedicated to offering a safe home for those in need.
Take a look at the 3D plan of the new Nammane Summane shelter home.

"Gender and age will be no barrier for seeking refuge at this shelter. We will provide education, healthcare facilities, and employment opportunities to all members," is the motto of Nakshatra.
Her team has sought cooperation from the police to identify those in need. The government has transferred the 20,000 sq land to the NGO, with the deed listing 'Nammane Summane' as the entity holding ownership.
THE IMPACT YOU CAN MAKE:
THE SOLUTION:
Nammane Summane is building Karnataka's largest shelter for the needy. This 25,000 sq ft facility will house 900 plus people across three floors, including children, adults, and the differently-abled. The shelter will include beds, toilets, a canteen, a first aid clinic, ramps, elevators, solar heating, and rooms for livelihood training.
FEATURES PLANNED AT THE NEW SHELTER :
The first aid clinic will be approximately 1,000 sq ft, and the dining hall is outside the building. The kitchen is planned to be built in an area of 1,500 sq ft. The children’s ward will be 1,000 sq ft in size.
ABOUT THE FOUNDER- Ms Nakshatra:
Nakshatra, a mechanical engineer, was ostracized by her family when she embraced herself as a transwoman. She lived on the streets for 3-4 months, searching for accommodation and shelter. This experience opened her eyes to the daily struggles and pain faced by homeless individuals. Motivated by this cause, she developed a solution to provide a home and education to everyone, regardless of their origins.
In 2020, Nakshatra founded the NGO 'Nammane Sammane,' an inclusive shelter home for all. Through Nammane Sammane she wanted to create a destitute home where there is no division of gender and class, and everybody is welcomed here,". The shelter provides beds, education for children, food, and necessary healthcare facilities to its residents.
