IS BAMBOO THE STRONGEST STUFF ON THE PLANET?
Bamboo has a greater tensile strength (or resistance to be pulled apart) than steel and it withstands compression better than concrete. The Chinese have a saying attributed to Confucius “The green reed which bends in the wind is stronger than the mighty oak which breaks in a storm.” The Bamboo’s strength is its ability to bend – that’s its strength ! We selected a special bamboo species called Pseudo-Oxytenanthera Stocksii which grows near our factory site and is ideally suited for building bamboo-framed bikes. No two bamboo stalks grow the same way & you would end up getting a very special and organically aesthetic frame that is unique to your bike !

Bamboo's unique tensile strength and its attribute of being 4 times as absorbent as carbon fibre, gets you a smoother ride even on bad roads – as our young cyclists discovered while travelling from Kanyakumari to Khardung La Pass! You would also help reduce the carbon footprint because you are consuming no energy to make the bamboo frame!
BAMBOO SELECTION & TREATMENT
Each of our Bamboo bikes are beautifully hand-crafted, and each frame is “one of a kind”! We have a carefully laid out process to identify suitable bamboo stems, select these to use on our frames, treat them appropriately to protect them from insects and the environment – and only then do we construct the frame. The entire capability has been developed in-house at our factory located outside Pune, with the know-how developed by our friend Craig Calfee in the USA.
HOW THIS IDEA WAS BORN ?
Vijay Crishna, Executive Director (Lawkim Motors Group, a division of Godrej and Boyce Mfg Co Ltd) travelled to Antarctica and happened upon a bamboo framed bike that had been ridden the entire length of North and South America. He was so inspired by the strength, agility and design of the bike that he thought of making these sustainable bicycles.
We invited the designer of the bike Craig Calfee to India to design this sustainable product for us. Craig took Lawkim’s team through a special 14-day Workshop specially designed by him to make the initial Prototypes.
We have tested our Bamboo bikes from Kanyakumari to Khardung-La (4400 KMS) during monsoon and bikes performed really well.
HOW WE TESTED OUR BAMBOO BIKES !
We have tested our bamboo Bicycle both ways at Government Lab as per ISO 4210 standard and also tested on road when Two cycling enthusiasts, cycled from Kanyakumari to Khardung la, on our bamboo bicycles. The total journey traveled was 4400 KMS in 65 days. started on 14th July 2016 and completed on 21st Sept 2016
MANUFACTURING AND SHIPPING
WARRANTY
With proper care and minimum maintenance your Bamboo Bike will serve you for years to come.
Warranty on the bicycle frame is for 1 year, the warranty is against manufacturing defects only.The liability of the company is limited to making good the defects arising because of poor craftsmanship during frame making.
Warranty does not cover any tires , tubes , rims , spokes , wiring , saddle , grips , gears or any other part or component of bicycle.
Warranty does not cover any physical damages or other damages arising from accidents , crashing , abuse , neglect or misuse of the Bamboo Bicycle.
Warranty is effective from the date of delivery.
Risks and challenges
We do not foresee any risks and challenges as we already have the 25 Bamboo frames ready at our manufacturing plant.

Bamboo grows abundantly and it grows across the world. It is also one of the fastest growing plant on Earth (certain species grow at a rapid rate over 4 feet in 24 hours).

What is the background of the promoters of this product? Where is this bike produced?
Established in 1961, Lawkim went on to pioneer the manufacture of hermetic compressor motors in India under technical collaboration with Emerson Electric, USA in 1965. The Godrej Family acquired the company in 1977 and today it is a part of the Godrej Group, manufacturing specialized hermetic compressor motors, single phase motors, custom-built three phase motors, single phase flameproof motors, components and parts such as wound stator and rotor assemblies and laminations/stampings for different applications.
In early 2014, a team of motivated youngsters were given an assignment to design the first bamboo bicycle and since then dedicated team is working on this project and entire manufacturing of bicycles happens at Lawkim shindewadi Factory near Pune.
What’s the maximum weight /load recommended ?
We've tested the bike up to 100Kgs .We cannot make any guarantees about performance or durability above that weight.
How high can the seat extend?
The seat can extend a full 12”. This puts it 42 inches off the ground.
What is the frame size?
The frame is 44" from axle to axle. 68" tire to tire.
How much does the bike weigh?
The weight of the bamboo poles varies.The bikes weight ranges from just 9 to 12 Kgs .
Can I replace the parts on the bike?
Sure. We had a few different options for the parts that we decided to move forward with. The decision to select these parts come down to price, availability at scale and quality. It is entirely up to you on what parts you would like to use. Replace them at will.
I have seen the wheels on a bike before at my local bike shop, can I buy those if I pop a tire?
Absolutely. The Bamboo bike uses parts that are already on existing bikes on the market. The bike parts can be found online, or on other bikes so they are commercially available.
Is this a single speed bike?
No our bike comes with 8-speed Shimano Gears
