Water is the key to life. Millions of women in rural India walk many kilometers a day to get water from a distant water source like a river, lake, or pond. They do this by carrying pots or vessels on their heads and making multiple trips. This takes up all their time, creates health issues (as it impacts the back, neck, etc), and leads to a very unproductive use of their time.
THE SOLUTION:
The WATER WHEEL is a simple, low-cost, high-impact initiative that allows them to carry a large volume of water with minimal effort. This saves them time, energy and is a game-changer in rural areas. They can use the time saved for the betterment of their families. It also creates social change as men step forward and use the water wheel to get water.
Each water wheel has a capacity of 45 L and one trip in a day is enough for the needs of the entire household typically.
THE WATER WHEEL
Water wheels will be distributed in the rural areas of Maharashtra. 1183 beneficiaries have been identified in villages across Palghar and Karjat. One of the most important behavioral changes is that men are willing to help out with getting water ( if a water wheel is available). That is a dramatic change in behavior at the grassroots and allows women to do other productive work.

ABOUT ME
Hi! My name is Gatik. I’m 12 years old and currently in Grade 6, Cambridge Section at Billabong High International School, Malad in Mumbai.
I’m excited to share a campaign that can transform the lives of countless women in rural Maharashtra. These women face the exhausting daily task of walking long distances to fetch water for their families. This arduous chore is not only time-consuming but also leads to physical strain, like back and neck pain, and takes away hours that could otherwise be spent productively—potentially earning income or caring for their families.
When I learned about the Water Wheel, I was thrilled and inspired. This simple yet groundbreaking innovation is an efficient water transport system that can carry up to 45 litres at once, meeting a household’s water needs for more than a day. Its design makes it easy to use: the handle can be detached in seconds, allowing it to double as a storage container. It’s built to last and, remarkably, has even encouraged a shift in community roles, with men now helping to fetch water too!
By supporting this campaign, you can help us bring this life-changing solution to even more women in remote, underserved areas. The Rotary Club of Hanging Gardens and its local partners will distribute the water wheels. Each unit, covering the cost of identification, the Water Wheel, and distribution, costs only INR 3000.
Let’s come together to make a meaningful impact on the lives of these women, bringing ease, opportunity, and hope to rural Maharashtra. Please join me in supporting this cause and helping to bring relief and joy to those who need it most.
FEATURES AND SPECS
The water wheel is a cylindrical plastic container that can hold over 45 liters of water. The handles help people to roll it on the ground without the physical strain that occurs while carrying water pots on the head, shoulders, or waist.

How does crowdfunding work?
Crowdfunding in India is a relatively new concept and is growing very quickly.
It’s a concept that allows a large number of funders (like you) to fund an idea or cause or event by giving small amounts of money online. Fueladream.com is a crowdfunding platform in India that allows for such pooling of funds. You can fund innovations and ideas on FuelADream and be the first to get these products or make them come true. You can also do a good turn by funding charities and causes through crowdfunding. When you fund a charity it’s more like a donation and you get small innovative rewards like a shout-out on an FB page or a thank-you email from the beneficiaries.
