I chose my camera to capture the images that reflect my journey and the emotions that have shaped me.
The Story Behind the Lens:
I am Viren Desai, a photographer, poet, and storyteller passionate about capturing the beauty of the world around me. Born and raised in India, I moved to the United States in the 1980s to pursue my education in photography. After completing my B.F.A. from the Rochester Institute of Technology, I worked as an assistant to over 100 professional photographers in New York City. I moved back to India to set up my studio in Mumbai in August 1987 and I've been freelancing since then.
As I see it, "Light" is the most important element in making an image "speak". I use light to create textures, highlight important elements, and convey emotions.
My work has been featured in various publications, including The Taj Magazine, Smart Photography, and Hindustan Times. I was also the first photographer in India to use High-Resolution Digital photography commercially in 1997.
A Glimpse into My Upcoming Book:
I'm thrilled to introduce my book, "Footprints in Time" (कुछ शब्द और तस्वीरें). This collection of poems and images is a labour of love, born out of my personal experiences and emotions over the past 35 years.
As I navigated life's journey, I found solace in writing poetry, mostly in Hindi, with some in English. My words are simple, heartfelt, and honest. I didn't aim for complex ideation or flowery composition; instead, I wrote from the heart, using words that resonated with me.

The images in this book were captured over the years, and I've carefully paired them with my poems to create a harmonious blend of words and visuals. I hope that as you read and reflect on these poems and images, you'll find echoes of your own emotions and experiences.
MY PREVIOUS BOOK:
In 2016, I successfully crowdfunded my book "The Grand Maestros of Indian Classical Music" on Fueladream, raising over INR 21 lakhs. The book was a tribute to the legends of Indian classical music, and it was a labour of love that took several years to complete. I am grateful to all the backers who supported me on that project, and I hope to repeat that success with "Footprints in Time".
