About:
My name is Saahil Ghorpade. I am 16 years old and a Grade 12 student at the Bombay Scottish School, Mahim.
COVID-19 has impacted millions of people. The worst-hit are the poor, migrants, and daily wage workers. Mumbai has not been spared and we are seeing its impact all around us. There has been a surge in cases & the situation will only get worse before it gets better.
A good example to understand what the underprivileged go through is the importance of money in their lives as compared to that of electricity in ours. Electricity is one of our important ‘fuels’ to sustain and live our lives just as money is for the them. The difficulties they face is beyond imagination. For us, the level of difficulty we would face not having electricity for one whole day may be compared to what they face every single day as we belong to the 'privileged' category of people who are used to a lavish and comfortable lifestyle.
For girls and women from financially weak backgrounds, the issue is compounded by the inaccessibility of menstrual hygiene measures. More than 300 million Indian women and girls do not have access to hygienic menstrual products. Their focus is on getting food and surviving the pandemic. Sanitary pads have greatly fallen in their priority list. To manage their menstrual needs, they are using unhygienic methods which will lead to a health crisis adding to the current one.
The solution is to provide them with a menstrual hygiene kit that is cost-effective, long-lasting and is not too bulky.
The Hygiene kit that is being given has four reusable sanitary pads. It creates no waste and is cost-effective whereas the disposable sanitary pads, that cost INR 50-100 per month, have to be bought repeatedly and create massive disposal problems. The cost of this hygiene kit is just INR 250.
I request you all to support my campaign so that we can also contribute to their well-being making a significant change in our society. Let's come together and do our bit by taking a step forward towards making this world a better place to live in, for EVERYBODY.
