About:
My name is Lakshana Vasan. I am 11 years-old and a Grade 6 student at The Pupil Saveetha (International) Eco School, Chennai.
I was clueless about what preterm babies were, and what special care they required until I was educated on it. I was astonished when I found out that 1 baby dies every minute in India and that 35% of them are pre-term babies .Pre-term babies are babies that are born before the 37 weeks of pregnancy which in result leads to underweight babies and low body temperatures which will lead to a medical condition known as hypothermia, which makes the baby's temperature freezing cold resulting to death. The first 28 days after the babies birth is crucial as it is very vulnerable. But, families with very low income are not aware of the special treatments they have to do in order to keep these babies alive, thus resulting in high rates of mortality.
Doctors suggest using the KMC technique (Kangaroo Mother Care) which requires the parent and the baby to have direct skin to skin contact as this will help regulate the baby's body temperature which decreases the mortality rate by 40%, but holding a baby for long periods of time is impossible.
A NGO in Chennai known as Ekam Foundation, has created a KMC Sling which can house the baby comfortably and make KMC hands - free.
Every ₹2500 funded will help 1 pre-term baby.
