I am psychologist by training with over 15 years of work in the development sector, dealing with some of the most vulnerable child population worldwide.
Nearly 1 in 5 Indians is suffering from some form of mental disorder, with nearly 1 in 20 having depression. This is particularly staggering for the rural communities. Having closely worked with rural communities, I have learnt that awareness of chronic conditions as a category is negligible and that of mental health conditions is close to non-existent in villages. We would go to the very heart of the community and try to bring our skills and knowledge to make them aware of their risks to chronic conditions and identify for them the ways to make lifestyle changes to reduce the risks.
