My name is Shuchi Kapoor and I am a documentary photographer and writer based in Chennai. Those of you who know me and appreciate what I do, also know that I have been working on long-term projects and have been published with various national and international publications. Chennai gave me the opportunity to exhibit my work for the first time and the experience of showcasing one's work to a wide audience is what got me interested in working towards the realm of exhibitions.
In 2016, I was part of the core team that pulled off the of the 1st edition of Chennai Photo Biennale (CPB), a massive public-art event, where we got national and international photographers to come down and showcase their work in parks, train stations and galleries across the city - all in a matter of 3 months! This commendable feat gave me and my team the confidence and the vision to be working in the space of public-art. Today, I am one of the trustees of the foundation that runs Chennai Photo Biennale.
My interest in CPB isn’t just limited to it’s celebration of photography. I see it becoming a home for photography in India, offering a gateway into the city’s unexplored and neglected spaces, offering opportunities to showcase, collaborate and grow - not just to photographers, but to anyone with an interest in the visual arts. With the advent of cellphone cameras, haven't we all become photographers today?
The plan for the next edition (22 Feb-24 Mar 2019) is to have print exhibitions in Universities, Museums, Libraries, Schools, Train Stations and Beaches across the city of Chennai and also mentor over 600 school and college students! By showcasing art in these public spaces, we make it accessible to all and we want the whole city to come and celebrate its rich history and culture. Through CPB, we will also shed a light on the lack of spaces for the public to come and experience art. Every city around the world that is famous, has been known to embrace public- art and we must come together and support initiatives such as these, not just for Chennai, but to put the Indian stamp on the global art map.
Am committing to raise INR 50,000 to help this initiative get to the overall goal of raising INR 3 Crores for creating a world-class mega event. CPB will surely impact the citizens of Chennai and all others who participate and is bound to shift their engagement towards contemporary arts and culture. Over a period of time, I see it definitely growing into a mass-movement that will impact and interest those in the south as well as across India and Asia. Our 1st edition is proof of international attention that we have managed to already generate.
I am reaching out to you to support me in my efforts towards building a home for Photography in India in Chennai - a city that you know I dearly love! Please do your best to fund my campaign and do remember that your donation will be recognised in putting India and Chennai on the world photography map. Because we believe in -
